Bufaland
A fun and original game, designed at Teachers College, Columbia University, to learn how to consciously and critically observe the news found online; provides the tools to identify the alarm bells that characterize fake news.
GAME
Bufaland is a very lively country: from the capital Portobuffale to the countryside, news flies fast thanks to the Web, but, just like in Italy, some is true and some is fake! Will you be able to ferret out the hoaxes among the buffaloes?
Game objective
The objective of the game is to collect the best association of evidence cards to support or challenge the news of the round.
Only by collecting the best evidence cards and achieving the highest score can you win the game; to do so, you must collect evidence to support or challenge the truthfulness of the news in play. In fact, the news reported on the news cards are not true or false per se: just as in the real world, you can evaluate them based on the evidence. Beware: you only have a limited number of elements at your disposal!
Evidence cards
Evidence cards are of two different types:
Who wins?
Whoever wins the game, and determines the truthfulness of the news in play, is the one who scored the highest score!
A piece of advice, what can you do to ferret out hoaxes?
Always read the whole news, don't stop at the headline! It may seem trivial but often people do not read the whole news and share it just based on the Headline. This is the way that fake news spreads the most!
