In gardening, expanded clay is perfect for draining water, a reason why a layer of it is always placed at the base of the pot. It is able to retain it, preventing the roots from molting or developing fungus dangerous to their survival. Occasionally it is mixed directly with universal potting soil and peat. In the latter case, an easy-to-work soil is obtained. Another important function of this element is to function as a mulch and be able to defend plants from cold and ice if placed on top of the plant at ground level. In particular, clay can come in handy in houseplants, helping to give them the right level of moisture and drainage capacity. In fact, the water absorbed by the expanded clay spheres will slowly evaporate, creating a perfect microclimate for our plants.
